The project:
The project is involve in testing, characterization and analysis of Tyre and ground, models that can be used for simulation of aircraft operations during ground roll under crosswind conditions. The main focus of the study (PhD topic) will be to develop a simulation methodology for tyre interaction with a contaminated runway that includes the dynamics of both tyre and liquids. This will involve developing models based on both empirical data developed from experiments and modelling (FEA). The study is part of a project sponsored by the European Union and Future Sky.
What the candidate will do: The candidate will participate in a fully-funded PhD program at the Centre of Automotive Technology (CAT) at Cranfield University, UK. The PhD will give the candidate a unique hands-on Project which will include testing and analysis of rubber and tyre models and its interactions with various ground conditions. the main duty of the candidate is to develop simulation models using LS DYNA (FEA + ALE). This experience will enable student to broaden and deepen your core engineering skills and explore those research areas that interest you most.
What you’ll get out of it: CAT has exceptional industrial links, with many projects offered by industrial partners. The centre is also involved in many EU and UK funded projects. Exposure to these projects will provide the candidate with valuable knowledge and insight into the world of Transport Systems. CAT is also involved in MSc Motorsports Engineering course.
On completion of the programme you will leave with far more than just a PhD qualification; you will have the skills, knowledge and acumen to become the future technical leader in advanced tyre mechanics and modelling, be it in academia or industry.

This research is organized jointly with Manx Utilities and Isle of Man, UK. Applications are invited for a PhD studentship in the Centre for Propulsion Engineering, Cranfield University, in the area of gas path diagnostics and prognostics.
Cranfield has developed a unique methodology and software to analyze the health of gas path components of gas turbine engines. The research in this area at Cranfield will be a good starting point for the proposed project for MU, an industrial sponsor of the project. The objective of the proposed research is to further develop the methodology in the area of gas path diagnostics and prognostics and apply the technology to the health analysis and prediction of the LM2500+ industrial gas turbine engines operated in MU. The critical components for the diagnostic and prognostic analysis will be the compressors and turbines. This is to support the condition-based maintenance in MU with the objective to improve the availability and reduce the maintenance costs of the engines.
The developed engine diagnostic and prognostic modules will be implemented into Cranfield Pythia gas turbine performance, diagnostics and lifing software in order that the engine field data can be used directly for the analysis.
Close communication with the industrial sponsor is expected and regular visits to the company will be funded by the project to assist the student to get first-hand information and experience of gas turbine operation.
